From the Boston Herald 9/21/08

Have furnaces and chimneys checked by a professional before heating season starts.

Unvented kerosene heaters are illegal in Massachusetts.

Wood, pellet and coal stoves require a permit from the local building inspector to ensure they are installed safely and properly.

Keep space heaters away from drapes and flammable materials.

Space heaters should be placed on a level surface away from areas where they may be knocked over.

If you must use an extension cord, make sure it is heavy-duty and has a power rating as high as that labeled on the heater.

Never leave a space heater unattended or on while you sleep.

Keep electric heaters away from water. Never use them near a sink or in the bathroom.

Don’t use an oven or cooking appliance as a heating source. Improper use of gas stoves contibutes to carbon monoxide buildup in homes.
